Note the word “Free” written next to “Negro Cesar,” the fourth name from the bottom of this roll.  Although it is not clear if he lived in Maryland, a large free black population co-existed among the enslaved in the state at the time this document is dated.  Slavery was abolished in Maryland in 1864.
